Binfield fire sparks need for chimney sweep advice

Fire fighters have advised people with chimneys or open fireplaces have been advised to ensure they are swept on a regular basis.
A firefighting crew from Bracknell in St. Marks Binfield were called to a fire at around 10pm on Saturday after flames were seen coming out of a chimney. The fire is believed to have been caused by deposits in the chimney, of either soot, creosote or debris that may have fallen into the chimney.
Michael Fulwell the watch manager at the time of the fire was quoted as saying that if you don't have your chimney swept you get a lining of deposits, which, if they get hot enough, can ignite. He strongly recommends that if you have a chimney in your home you have it swept every year.

Causes and prevention of chimney fires:

  • No grate, fire directly on the floor the fireplace.
  • More firewood in the fireplace than actually required.
  • Damaged dampers.
  • Soft woods such as pine cause creosote to build up sooner.
  • Blockage or damage in the flue.

Why should you clean your chimney regularly

Chimney cleaning Chimney Cleaner is an essential task in general home maintenance. There are two common causes for a flue blockage, or blocked chimney.

  1. A chimney could require cleaning due to regular usage, which over time causes a deposit of soot and creosote to build up sufficiently to cause a flue blockage. Creosote is a highly flammable residue produced by wood or coal fires, which also has carcinogenic properties (a cancer causing agent). A chimney blocked due to creosote build-up can also cause a chimney fire, where temperatures may exceed 1000 Celsius, which could destroy your chimney or force dangerous fumes into your home.
  2. During long periods of inactivity (such as summer) bird or animal nests in the chimney itself can also be a hazard that needs to be cleared. These nests also have the potential to catch fire and either cause a chimney fire or force dangerous fumes into your home. To protect the health and safety of both your family and your home, all chimneys should be inspected and cleaned annually. More often if it’s used frequently during the winter months (15 hours or more per week).
Chimney safety is incredibly important. It can save lives

Why clean your chimney?

The photo below is the soot that we scraped, brushed and ground out of 1 chimney in Fourways. Yes, this came from only ONE chimney. If this caught fire it may have caused a serious chimney fire.

What is involved in our chimney cleaning process ?

  1. Our team will arrive and inspect your chimney to assess what blockages need to be removed.
  2. We will lay a tarp in front of the fireplace and hearth to help minimise the mess.
  3. We will tarp off the front opening of the firebox.
  4. A strong vacuum cleaner will be on hand for dust and soot control.
  5. Special brushes will be used to clean the build-up of soot and creosote in the chimney flue.
  6. The firebox walls will be brushed down.
  7. The smoke shelf will be cleaned.
  8. Finally we will clean up and remove all tarp and other waste materials.
  9. Most standard chimney cleanings will take between 1 and 2 hours, depending on access, date of last clean, etc.

Chimney fires

Depending on the type of wood you burn in your fireplace and the moisture content of the wood the fire will leave a deposit of soot or tar and creosote on the walls of the chimney as the smoke exits.

The importance of cleaning your chimney on a regular basis will become apparent when you watch the video below. The build up in the chimney is flammable and once it catches alight burns at an extremely high temperature which will damage the chimney making it unusable in future and also setting the rest of the house on fire.
